Patrick Cantlay has become the first player on the PGA Tour to put the new Titleist GTS4 driver into play — and the early signs suggest it could be a game-changer.

The eight-time PGA Tour winner climbed into contention at the RBC Heritage after a superb second-round 64 at Harbour Town Golf Links, moving to nine-under par and into a tie for third, five shots behind leader Matt Fitzpatrick.

Cantlay’s performance has been driven by steady play off the tee, where he currently ranks seventh in strokes gained (1.794) — an encouraging return linked closely to his latest equipment switch.

This week marks the debut of the Titleist GTS4 driver on the PGA Tour, with Cantlay opting to put it straight into competition. The update was first confirmed by Golf WRX's Alistair Cameron.

The American, who is not tied to a single equipment manufacturer, has previously rotated between several driver models including the PING G440 LST, Titleist GT2 and Titleist TS3.

He continues to pair his driver with a Mitsubishi Diamana ZF 60 TX shaft.

Cantlay might be the only player this week to add the new GTS4, but he's one of four players to add a new GTS driver model to their bag this week.

Jordan Smith, Harry Hall and Kurt Kitayama have all added a Titleist GTS3 models.

Few players boast a stronger record at the RBC Heritage than Cantlay. In eight appearances, he has finished inside the top three five times and recorded seven top-13 finishes, underlining a remarkable level of consistency at the venue. However, a victory here has so far eluded him.

The 32-year-old is also chasing his first PGA Tour win since August 2022 — and still seeking a breakthrough maiden major championship title — adding further importance to this stretch of the season.

Speaking after his second round, Cantlay revealed he has been working to rediscover a familiar swing pattern in recent weeks.

“I’ve just been working on the same couple of things in my swing,” he said.

“Going back to a pattern that I’ve played with before. It’s starting to feel a little better.

“Hopefully my game is rounding into form at a busy time, at an important time of the year.”

With three major championships fast approaching in the coming months, Cantlay will be hoping both his swing changes and new driver continue to deliver as he looks to finally return to the winner’s circle.
