"No fiddling with wrenches, screws or gadgets," says Callaway about its latest Big Bertha FT-3 Fusion driver, used to win the US Open.

The driver used by Michael Campbell to win the US Open, will be available on July 4 at selected retail stores and authorised pro shops. It will have a recommended price of £299.

Callaway Golf says the Big Bertha Fusion FT-3 driver combines its patented internal weight-shifting technology with a precision-tuned face ‘to deliver explosive distance with accuracy and forgiveness.’

Phil Mickelson has also used it in his three 2005 wins, and Annika Sörenstam has dominated the LPGA circuit with six wins, including two major championships already this year.

"This is our most exciting driver launch in years," said Bill Baker, Chairman of Callaway Golf. "Our club designers and engineers have solved the riddle of how to best distribute weight in the clubhead, and have come up with a driver that can benefit every sort of golfer – from pro to weekend player, from one who hooks to one who slices and everyone in between."

Callaway says its Fusion technology is a marriage of ‘ultra-hot titanium face and a superlight carbon composite body’ allowing weight to be distributed within the head to benefit golfers’ unique swing types and ball flights.’

The ‘titanium cup face,’ Callaway claims, generates greater ball speed for and distance.

"The FT-3 really made a difference for me at Pinehurst," Campbell said. "I was driving it miles and still hitting a ton of fairways. It was a big part of my win."

With a veiled tilt at other leading manufacturers, Callaway commented: "All the discretionary weight in the FT-3 gives our engineers the latitude to precisely position it to achieve maximise stability and generate corrective-spin
characteristics. No fiddling with wrenches, screws or gadgets."

"And with our OptiFit fitting system, golfers can customise their driver simply by choosing the se-up that best fits their individual swing type - Neutral for maximum workability, Draw for reducing a slice or fade and promoting a draw or Fade for reducing a hook and promoting a fade or straight ball.

The FT-3 and FT-3 Tour drivers are similar in design but the Tour version, available in 8.5 and 9.5 lofts only, has a face angled slightly more open than the standard lofts (9 11 degrees and High Trajectory), while the Aldila NVS 65 stiff or regular flexes, complement the swing speeds and styles of more accomplished players.

It’s also available in left-handed versions and with light and ladies shafts.
