KBS 610 wedge shaft review

If you have ever thought about using a different shaft in your wedges as opposed to your irons, steel-shaft specialists KBS will quickly become your friend this season.

Breaking new ground for 2015 with the first ever "wedge specific" shafts, KBS is providing players with an ability to better control their ball flight on shots struck anywhere inside of 125 yards.

Testing the new KBS 610 wedge shaft - derived from its 0.610 butt -  with a GC2 launch monitor and out on the course, we noticed a much more penetrating ball flight with controlled spin on shots struck with a 56-degree wedge.

We found the 120g stiff flex version - also available in 110g (regular) and 125g (stiff +) - was generating a two-degree lower launch, increased clubhead speed, an additional three yards of carry distance and tighter dispersion on those full-blooded wedge shots.

Given how high I tend to hit my wedges, it can often be infuriating to see the ball get knocked down by the breeze, losing distance and accuracy in the process.

With the 610 shaft fitted in your wedge, you can now flight the ball a little more powerfully through the wind and control it how you would normally expect to.

Wedges: 10 things to know

Verdict

If you are struggling to hit your wedges low enough, you will want to take a closer look at the KBS 610 wedge-specific shaft.

Although the trajectory was a touch lower than my current wedge on full 100-yard shots, it was still flying plenty high enough to hold the green.

Where the 610 really earned its stripes was on those three-quarter shots. It was like tossing bean bags filled with lead. Shots struck inside of 75 yards tended to take one bounce and stop within several feet of their descent.

Shots around the green and out of greenside bunkers felt great, but by no means any different to my current wedge shaft.

If you are at the opposite end of the spectrum and want to create more height with your wedges, check out the new KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 wedge-specific shaft that will aim to increase your launch angle, clubhead speed and spin.
