Among golf’s club amateur players you’d think the names of David Leadbetter, Bob Torrance and Butch Harmon would be the coaches they’d immediately recognise and relate to.

But you’d be wrong. Peter Ballingall has probably taught more golfers how to play than the famous trio put together.

For nearly 25 years, he has run his golf schools at Barnham Broom in Norfolk, having been the professional since 1977, and thousands have been grateful for his no nonsense but patient teaching methods.

From beginner to scratch player there has always been something to add to their game as a result of Ballingall’s coaching and encouragement.

I once sent a young five handicap member of my magazine staff and his girlfriend – a golfing novice –to sample Ballingall’s teaching philosophy they both came back full of refreshed enthusiasm.

Now Ballingall and his wife Helene are seeking new challenges on Spain’s Costa de La Luz where he plans to set up a new golf school business at Club de Golf El Rompido near Huelva close to Faro and Seville.

The first of two 18-hole courses and training areas open in July with a three hotel complex.

"This is a dream come true," he says. "It was John Jacobs’ influence that saw me installed as Barnham Broom and he was instrumental in my being sought for the position at El Rompido. I’m really excited by the challenges ahead. While most people of my age are thinking of slowing down, my foot is firmly on the accelerator."
