Would it be unreasonable to suggest the vast majority of golf fans were hoping Rickie Fowler would win the US Open?

The golfer had a bright start to his PGA Tour career, winning coveted events such as the Players at TPC Sawgrass.

He's even been involved in multiple US Ryder Cup sides. The only thing missing for Fowler was winning a major championship.

That is not to say that he hasn't had his chances, but he's always come up agonisingly short.

Fowler hasn't been spoken about much in the last few years as he took a dramatic tumble down the OWGR.

But this season his hard work after being reunited with Butch Harmon now appears to be paying off somewhat.

The 34-year old got off to a blazing start at the 2023 US Open, shooting a course record of 62 on the opening day.

He kept himself in contention and after 54 holes he shared the lead with eventual champion Wyndham Clark.

It really didn't go to plan for Fowler during the final round and eventually Fowler finished fifth after making bogey at his 72nd hole.

There is absolutely no denying that the world of men's professional golf has been fractured owing to the PGA Tour/LIV Golf beef.

Fowler made it clear he was torn over the decision to join LIV Golf. That being said, his popularity has never wavered.

But one person isn't a fan. That would be Skip Bayless, known for his controversial views.

He went after Fowler in the immediate aftermath of his latest disappointment:

What did Fowler say about his US Open heartbreak?

Fowler told the media he 'just didn't have it', but was sure to look at the bigger picture.

He told the media:

"I mean, obviously very bummed, but being able to see my daughter before scoring, it kind of takes a lot of that away because in the kind of big picture, big scheme of things, yes, we want to win tournaments and be the one holding the trophy, but she could care less if I shoot 65 or 85.
"I was excited that she was able to stay up. We pushed her past her bedtime. Or I didn't."
