Sam Burns produced a fantastic back-nine display in Mississippi, rallying to a one-shot victory in the Sanderson Farms Championship.

The rising star won his first PGA Tour event at the Valspar Championship last season and he has now doubled his career tally at the Country Club of Jackson.

It is the 25-year-old's fifth top-three finish on the PGA Tour in 2021 and he had to fight off the likes of Nick Watney and Sahith Theegala on his way to victory.

The 54-hole leader was tour rookie Theegala, who began the day on 18-under-par. He birdied two of his first three holes to move to 20-under-par for the tournament.

Burns, who started one shot behind on Sunday, birdied the 3rd, 5th and 7th holes to tie the lead. At this stage, there were 13 players within two shots of the lead in Mississippi.

Theegala made another birdie at the 8th hole to edge ahead 21-under-par, while Watney was storming up the leaderboard. The five-time PGA Tour winner was looking for his first win in nine years.

Watney made seven birdies in a bogey-free round to post a fantastic 65, reaching 21-under-par. This was the clubhouse mark, but Burns soon took control.

He began his back nine with a birdie at the 11th hole. He then took the tournament by the scruff of the neck with three consecutive birdies at holes 13, 14 and 15.

Unfortunately for Theegala, his dream start to his rookie season faded. He bogeyed the 10th, 11th and 13th holes to fall back to 18-under-par and out of the contest.

Burns, now in prime position on 23-under-par, just needed to stay steady, and he did. Despite a bogey on the final hole, he secured victory with a 67 in what could be a great start to a memorable season.
