Max Homa wants to completely get rid of a tie to retain Ryder Cup or Solheim Cup

"They don't make sense to me" - Max Homa wants talking point removed.

Max Homa wants to completely get rid of a tie to retain Ryder Cup or Solheim Cup

Max Homa wants to see the back of teams retaining both the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup via a tied 14-14 match.

Homa, 32, made his feelings known in the media centre ahead of his United States Ryder Cup debut at Marco Simone this week.

The subject of a team retaining a cup following a tied match has been in the spotlight in recent days.

This was after Suzann Pettersen's Team Europe retained the Solheim Cup on home soil at Finca Cortesin in Spain via the first ever tie in Solheim Cup history, and US Solheim Cup captain Stacy Lewis questioned the eventual outcome of a tied match.

You have to go back to 1989 for the last time the Ryder Cup finished in a tie.

That particular week saw Tony Jacklin's Team Europe retain the Ryder Cup at The Belfry.

Should the 2023 Ryder Cup finish in a 14-14 tie this week, it would see Zach Johnson's Team USA retain the famous trophy.

Homa believes a playoff is the best possible way to determine the outcome of a Ryder Cup or Solheim Cup should it end 14-14.

The American said:

"I've never liked ties. They don't make sense to me. The whole point of any competition is to see who wins. So I do not like ties. I do not like the retaining thing.
"I understand it, I understand why they do it, but I'm not a fan of it. You have a completely new team, for instance, at the Solheim Cup, and they tied. Someone should play a playoff.
"I thought one of the most exciting things we've had, although it still ended in a tie, was Tiger [Woods] and Ernie [Els] playing at the Presidents Cup. That was one of the coolest memories you could have of a team event.
"You would, I guess, crave more of that if possible, plus we don't tie very often in this thing. I don't know, people much smarter than me would have an answer for that, but I don't know, just ties leave a bad taste in my mouth."

Should a tie at the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup be removed for good, or are you happy for teams to retain the cup should things end in a 14-14 tie? Share your thoughts and comments over on the GolfMagic social media channels.
