England's Tommy Fleetwood acknowledged his impeccable form could change very quickly after setting up a glorious chance for his third win of the season.

Europe's Ryder Cup hero, 34, shares the lead with compatriot Aaron Rai at the halfway stage of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship

Fleetwood made a flying start with three birdies in a row and ultimately carded a six-under 66 to sit atop the leaderboard on 14-under par.

Shane Lowry is also inside the top-10, but Masters champion Rory McIlroy could only muster a second-round 68 and is currently in a share of 20th place.

McIlroy is chasing his seventh Harry Vardon trophy which would bring him one shy of matching Colin Montgomerie's record.

The $9m DP World Tour event at Yas Links is being contested by the top 70 players in the Race to Dubai rankings, with only the top 50 advancing to next week's finale.

Should Fleetwood win, it would represent his third time in the winner's circle in 2025. In August, Fleetwood finally won in the United States at the Tour Championship on his 164th attempt.

It followed brutal near-misses at the Travelers Championship and FedEx St. Jude Championship.

After helping Europe win a dramatic Ryder Cup on away soil at Bethpage Black in September, Fleetwood's incredible season continued with another win at the inaugural India Championship.

"Really good day," he told Sky Sports on Friday. "I got off to like the perfect start. Birdie, birdie, birdie. That was good, especially when you've had a good round the day before.

"They always say it's hard to follow up a good round with another good one, or a low one with another one."

Humble Fleetwood denied that he was playing golf on "autopilot" at the moment.

"If you're going to be up there on Sunday you're going to have to be pretty relentless and keep hitting good shots and keep scoring," he said.

"I feel, obviously, good about my game and I'm doing so many things well. But I'm also very aware of what the game can do to you as well.

"I'll just stay very focused on each day. I'm having a lot of good rounds but I'm not stupid, and it's bitten me enough times.

"I'll enjoy these good ones but stay focused and continue to do the right things and keep it going as long as possible."
