Dustin Johnson slams ‘keep your head down’ as worst golf advice — fellow LIV stars agree

Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau both agree on the worst bit of golf advice of all time. We bet you've heard this one before!

Dustin Johnson has had enough of one of golf’s oldest adages: “Keep your head down.” The two-time major champion and former World No.1 told LIV Golf’s social media team that the advice drives him “crazy.”

He’s not alone. Bryson DeChambeau, Graeme McDowell, and Richard Bland all chimed in with the same verdict, pointing to the head as the source of some of the worst advice in golf.

A number of golf instructors have told golfers through the years "keep your head down", primarily to promote consistent, solid contact by preventing the body from rising too early during the swing.

But in the eyes of some of the game's best players such as Johnson and DeChambeau, that advice is outdated or in fact not needed at all.

“Keep your head down,” said Johnson when pressed by LIV Golf for the worst bit of golf advice he's ever heard in his career.

“That one always drives me crazy. You don't really need to do that. You get all these errors when they swing like this and you're like enough.”

Crushers GC captain and two-time US Open champion DeChambeau was in agreement: “Something I held dear to my heart, keep your head still is not really what happens when you start getting really good at the game.”

“Keep your head down... that's never good, too restrictive,” said Bland, who represents Martin Kaymer’s Cleeks GC.

Former US Open champion and Smash GC player McDowell was blunt: “I've heard a lot of bad advice, but keep your head down said no one ever.”

Other LIV Golf stars also revealed their top offenders.

Fireballs GC captain Sergio Garcia pointed to the Happy Gilmore coaching cliché: “Oh, be sure you swing the hips,” referencing Chubbs’ line: “It’s all in the hips…”

LIV Golf is on a short break this week but returns in two weeks in Hong Kong, where Garcia will defend his title.

The league now awards Official World Golf Ranking points, albeit in limited form, and the circuit has also confirmed it will now align tournament conditions with the R&A and USGA to raise standards across all events.
