U.S. Women's Open: The big names in danger of missing the cut at Riviera
U.S. Women's Open: Several big names have a lot of work to do if they are to make the weekend at the second women's major of the year.
The U.S. Women's Open continues this weekend at Riviera Country Club.
It's a bunched leaderboard at the top after 18 holes in Los Angeles, with former major winner Jennifer Kupcho setting the early pace.
Kupcho went round the iconic layout in five-under 66 on Thursday to lead South Korea's Kim Sei-Young by one stroke.
Former Women's Open champion Hinako Shibuno is amongst a group of five players a further stroke adrift.
The biggest surprise on day one came from pre-tournament favourite and world number one Nelly Korda.
Korda, 27, sits seven strokes off the lead after enduring an up-and-down day.
The American began the day wearing a pair of custom Nike's gifted to her by NBA legend LeBron James but switched out of them after the sixth hole.
Korda is not the only big name fighting for survival.
Her nearest challenger in the world rankings, Jeeno Thitikul, also sits on two-over.
England's Charley Hull also needs to go low this afternoon.
And the same can be said for her compatriots Lottie Woad, Mimi Rhodes and Bronte Law.
The top 65 players and ties will make the 36-hole cut at the 2026 U.S. Women's Open.
