Son of European Ryder Cup legend sets massive golf goal: "I'm ready for that challenge"
Ian Poulter's 21-year-old son Luke has claimed he wants to become the best player in the world.
Ian Poulter's son Luke has revealed he is targeting become the best player in the world one day.
The 21-year-old amateur has been making waves in recent months and came within one shot of qualifying for his first major in June.
Luke narrowly missed out on qualifying for the US Open at Oakmont after losing in a playoff on what is known as golf's longest day.
And he also came up a few shots short of qualifying for next week's Open at Royal Portrush in Final Qualifying.
He pegged it up in the same qualifier with his father at Royal Cinque Ports and played the first 18 holes in superb fashion by firing a five-under 67.
But he backed that up with a second round of 76 to finish outside the top 10 alongside the European Ryder Cup legend.
Luke told The Times of London his recent performances have given him reason to believe he can compete in the paid professional ranks in the future.
And his main golf goal? Well, he certainly has his father's confidence.
"The main goal is to get to number one in the world," he told the publication.
"To win a major would be amazing. But overall, I'd love just to follow in his footsteps and make him proud.
"We talk a bit about how there’s not been many PGA Tour pros' sons that have made it on tour.
"I'm ready for that challenge. Add one more to that list."
Ian was never short of confidence in his pomp.
In 2008, he told Golf Magazine: "I just don't rate anyone else...I really respect everyone who is a professional golfer.
"But I know I haven't played to my full potential yet. And, when that happens, it will be just me and Tiger."
At the time, his comment caused an almighty stir.
He later said he was misquoted and what was published did not accurately reflect his intended meaning.
As for the future, Ian hopes he gets the opportunity to caddie for his son in a major championship.
"It will be his choice if he wants me to caddie, but, if it's mine, I'll be on the f------ bag, let me tell you, there's no question about it," he said.
"I might be an absolute blubbering mess. It's fairy-tale stuff. It really is"
