Former Open champion Shane Lowry makes pointed remark about former caddie
Former Open champion Shane Lowry appeared to indicate he had a big falling out with his former caddie Brian 'Bo' Martin.
Former Open champion Shane Lowry appeared to indicate he had a huge falling out with his ex caddie Brian 'Bo' Martin.
Ireland's Lowry claimed a first major championship win with a dominant six-shot victory at the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush.
The European Ryder Cup star put on a masterclass and held his nerve in the wind and the rain to hold off a challenge from England's Tommy Fleetwood.
Lowry will be among the home favourites as the major heads back to Portrush in two weeks' time.
The 38-year-old has already made a reconnaissance trip ahead of the final men's major of the year and part of that excursion saw him relive the victory.
Lowry opened up on his emotions that week as he walked the 18th hole with Scottish sports broadcaster Andrew Cotter in a YouTube video for the R&A.
When Lowry won The Open, the celebrations started early. His name was already being engraved on the Claret Jug as he approached the 18th green as he soaked in the adulation from the crowd.
Moments before taking 'the best walk in golf', Lowry warmly embraced his then-caddie Martin.
"I definitely told him I loved him," Lowry told Cotter. "Not so sure that's the case anymore."
Lowry confirmed the split with Martin in January 2023 after nearly five years together.
At the time, Lowry said the pair lost their spark but there were signs of tension between the pair.
That was evident when Lowry voiced his anger towards Martin during the 2022 Masters.
Lowry fumed at Martin on the 13th hole after he laid up in the wrong spot.
"What a f------ s--- yardage that was," hot mics picked up Lowry saying. "Well done, well done Bo. Only 30 yards out. Well done."
Lowry now has Darren Reynolds on the bag and Martin carries the sticks for Min Woo Lee.
Why not again?
Scottie Scheffler is the favourite to win The Open, followed by Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Fleetwood, Bryson DeChambeau and reigning champion golfer of the year Xander Schauffele.
Lowry said his Open victory feels like 'a long time ago'.
"A lot has happened since then," Lowry said. "But when you come back and see it like this, you do think, why not again?"
He added: "I gave myself a bit of a chance at Troon last year, and I'd love to put my name on the Claret Jug again. But I try not to put too much pressure on myself because that's the hardest part.
"When you've tasted something like this, you just want it so badly to happen again."
