American duo Max McGreevy and Joel Dahmen are in the chasing pack, with South Korea's Si Woo Kim a further stroke adrift.
Several big names missed the cut.
Xander Schauffele is among the notables who will have the weekend off after his impressive streak ended on Friday.
Schauffele told reporters equipment tweaks led to his underwhelming performance.
Brooks Koepka, making his first start on the PGA Tour in four years, made the weekend on the number after firing a four-under 68 on Friday.
Koepka sits towards the bottom of the leaderboard but has vowed to take the reins off in an effort to climb it over the final 36 holes.
