Xander Schauffele suggested equipment tweaks led to an underwhelming week at the Farmers Insurance Open.

The two-time major champion, 32, entered this week's PGA Tour event in San Diego having made an impressive 72 cuts in a row.

Schauffele's streak - which was tied for the fifth longest in history - stretched back to the 2022 Masters.

Rounds of 69 and 73 on the North Course and South Course at Torrey Pines mean that Schauffele now has the weekend off.

"Kind of had some last minute tweaks to equipment and it really affected me through my bag, I thought," Schauffele told reporters on Friday.

"So [it was] unfortunate I didn't get that dialled in in the offseason, but it is what it is. So here I am. I'll spend this weekend cleaning it up."

Schauffele had a putt from inside 12 feet to make the cut on the number but missed it high.

"There's no boards on the North Course so I kind of missed my putt and I looked at Austin [Kaiser, caddie] and I said, 'Is that it?'

"He said, 'Yeah, you're done', and I was like okay. So, you know, in terms of pulling a tooth, that was kind of it.

"I think the whole point of the streak is you just... I mean, Scheffler's on a good one and you don't really think about it, you're just trying to hit as many good shots as possible and make as many good putts as possible.

"I had plenty of golf today to make it and bogeying a drivable par-four and parring two par-fives in the middle of the fairway, you deserve to miss the cut. So here I am."

Pressed on what equipment he tweaked, Schauffele said: "Just some driver stuff. Driver, shaft, trying to get the combination right.

"I don't like switching stuff and I switched, and then when you switch back, things kind of feel weird.

"You start swinging to fit the club and if kind of affects like everything down the bag. So not a great place to do it."

Schauffele said that he doesn't need any time off having had plenty of time to relax after the Ryder Cup

Asked by one reporter how upset he was, Schauffele replied: "I mean, I obviously I don't like missing cuts, I think my record proves that.

"But it's actually kind of nice, to be honest, if I was going to pick a spot. I get to hang out with my family.

"If I miss the cut in Charlotte or somewhere, I would just be sitting in a hotel room by myself. I have the comfort of my family here to hang out.

"You know what, all said and done it's probably the best place to miss it."
