US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley has reportedly already made up his mind over whether to include Patrick Cantlay in his plans.

The 38-year-old will find out which players will automatically qualify for his team at the conclusion of this week's BMW Championship

Scottie Scheffler, who won this year's Open and PGA Championship, along with US Open champion JJ Spaun, and Xander Schauffele have already qualified.

LIV Golf recruit Bryson DeChambeau, Russell Henley and Harris English currently occupy the three remaining automatic qualifying berths.

DeChambeau has already been assured of selection, according to the skipper.

Bradley could also punch his ticket to the biennial contest at Bethpage Black with a victory at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland.

He'll then have a week to consider his six wildcards and, at this stage, it appears wide open as to who Bradley will include.

There are no shortage of options and several players previously considered shoo-ins are out of form.

This is in stark contrast the Team Europe, who seem more than likely to have at least 11 players from the team of 12 that emerged victorious in Rome two years ago.

Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose became the latest to qualify for Luke Donald's dozen after the FedEx St. Jude Championship, joining up with Rory McIlroy

Cantlay's case is a curious one though.

His Ryder Cup credentials are very good and he has an overall record of 5-2-1 over two appearances at Whistling Straits and Marco Simone.

Cantlay, along with Max Homa, appeared to be the only two US golfers to emerge from Italy's defeat with any credit.

But his form this season has been underwhelming to say the least, with missed cuts at the PGA Championship, US Open and The Open.

Golf reporter and writer Kyle Porter believes Cantlay needn't worry, though.

"There's a difference between what I think should happen and what I think will happen," he told the most recent edition of the No Laying Up podcast.

"I have heard that he is inked. But personally, I would not have him inked on my team.

"But I think for the purpose of is he going to be on the team? Yes, he's going to be on the team.

Porter added: "He's been better than Keegan and Ben Griffin over the last six months, and better than all but three Europeans, which is sort of my point.

"Sometimes we talk about Cantlay like, 'oh, he sucks right now'. There's only been three Euros that have been better than him over the last six months.

"And again, I get that you can throw out the strokes gained stuff when we get to match play, I understand all that, but the way we talk about it going in, I think should even shift from some of the discourse right now about how these two teams are being talked about."

Patrick Cantlay tells Keegan Bradley to pick himself

Whether or not Bradley should pick himself has been widely debated since the 38-year-old won the Travelers Championship in June.

Cantlay said Bradley should pick himself, providing he feels comfortable that he can handle all of his other responsibilities.

"I think he's definitely one of the best American players, and his results have shown that," Cantlay said.

As for his own prospects, the 33-year-old said: "I'm just focused on the task at hand and worrying about these two weeks to close out the season.

"Once the season is over, my mind will shift towards that if that's in the cards for me."

Cantlay also revealed he has hired a new putting coach.
