Rory McIlroy makes hilarious prize money comment after falling short to Jacob Bridgeman
Find out how much money Jacob Bridgeman, Rory McIlroy and others earned at the 2026 Genesis Invitational, hosted by Tiger Woods.
Rory McIlroy could not help but think of the extra money after making the longest putt of his final round on 18.
McIlroy's Spider went cold for the much of Sunday's round at the Genesis Invitational, at least until it warmed up on the last.
The Northern Irishman ranked well down the board for strokes-gained putting, losing nearly two shots to the field on the greens at Riviera.
McIlroy missed multiple putts inside of 10 feet, especially on the front nine, and rarely scared the hole when he had an outside look.
He hit one of his better putts of the final round from 20 feet on the 16th that ended up one revolution shy of going down for birdie.
But his TP5 finally saw darkness from long range on the par-4 18th as McIlroy drained a 30-footer to bring the house down in front of tournament host Tiger Woods.
Unfortunately though, it was too little too late for the Ulsterman who was seeking a landmark 30th PGA Tour title and first ever at Riviera.
McIlroy signed for a closing 67 that was one shot shy of the winning score.
His closing birdie was unfortunately not enough to force a playoff as his playing partner Jacob Bridgeman held his nerve to two-putt from 25 feet for a first PGA Tour title.
McIlroy shared second with Kurt Kitayama, who closed with a brilliant 64.

When pressed by a reporter as to whether he thought it was cruel for his ball to finally go down from long range on the 18th, McIlroy replied with a smile:
"No, not really. It probably earned me an extra 400, 500 grand so it's fine."
It certainly did, Rory... 600 grand to be precise.
Not that he needs the extra bit of cash, but McIlroy walked out of Riviera with a cool $1.8 million for his joint runner-up finish.
McIlroy's career earnings on the PGA Tour now stand at $110,124,516, which is little more than $10m away from Woods' all-time record of $120,999,166.
Rory McIlroy finished T2 at the Genesis Invitational. Clueless reporter: Was it almost cruel to see that one on 18 go in after so many slipped by earlier?

Bridgeman, who now vaults to the top of the FedEx Cup standings after winning at Riviera, unsurprisingly earns the biggest pay day of his career with a whopping $4m.
The $20m Genesis Invitational marked the second Signature Event of the PGA Tour season.
Woods was once again acting as tournament host as the event benefits his TGR Foundation.
The 15-time major champion was on hand to present the trophy to Bridgeman.
Bridgeman has now chalked up five straight top-20 finishes in a row on the PGA Tour.
He now moves into the world's 25 for the first time in his career.
Adam Scott finished fourth and pocketed $920,000, while Aldrich Potgieter rounded out the top five with $840,000 in the bank.
Elsewhere, Scottie Scheffler's consecutive streak of top-10 finishes narrowly came to an end with a T12 finish.
Scheffler banked $415,000.
