Son of European Ryder Cup legend set for first PGA Tour start
Ian Poulter, son, Luke, will make his first start on the PGA Tour next March at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Ian Poulter's son, Luke, is set to make his first appearance on the PGA Tour.
The 22-year-old, a member of the University of Florida men’s golf team, has received an exemption into next March’s Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Luke secured the invitation after being named one of two recipients of a sportsmanship award at last week’s Arnold Palmer Cup at Tralee Golf Links in Ireland
The International side, who took a six-point lead into the final day at the annual event, completed a nail-biting 30½-29½ win over Team USA.
Luke did not win a match during the week, recording two halves and two defeats, but he was named the International team's recipient of the Michael Carter Jr. Memorial Award, presented to the player who best embodies the qualities and ideals of the late golfer.
Carter was a promising collegiate golfer at Penn State University. He tragically died in a car crash in 2002 and the award was created in his memory that same year.
The Arnold Palmer Invitational is scheduled for the third week of March 2027, immediately following The Players Championship.
Luke's father Ian, 50, wrote on Instagram: "Congratulations Luke on your invitation to the @apinv next year.
"I can't wait to watch you play after all the years of you watching me play in it."
Luke Poulter's career so far
Luke has established himself as one of the leading figures in U.S. collegiate golf.
He claimed his first win at the 2025 Schenkel Invitational and also helped the Gators sweep the Columbus Regional in May.
Poulter has also gained experience in elite team events, representing Great Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup and featuring for the International team at the Arnold Palmer Cup.
He has also come extremely close to securing his first major starts over the last two years, coming up agonisingly short at Final Qualifying for the U.S. Open and The Open.
A successful week for the Poulters
Ian Poulter made his first start in a senior major last week.
The 50-year-old teed up at the U.S. Senior Open and finished fourth overall, seven behind champion Padraig Harrington.
Poulter, who joined LIV Golf in 2022, was reunited with several of former European Ryder Cup teammates and past rivals.
"I didn't know what to expect," he said.
"My whole highlight of the week, I think, is enjoying catching up with so many old friends," he added.
"I knew that was going to be the case coming in.
"I knew all of my friends that I've played golf with for two decades are now transitioned and over here playing golf.
"It was like a special school reunion type deal. Everyone has been amazing. Every conversation I've had with everybody has been brilliant.
"That's been my one big takeaway this week is the enjoyment that I've had playing golf with Darren [Clarke] and [Miguel Angel] Jiménez, who I've played so many Ryder Cups with, and playing golf with Jamie [Donaldson] today.
"I can go on and on and on. There's probably 50 guys I've had great conversation with.
"It's been a very social week from that aspect, very enjoyable week and an enjoyable week."
