World number one Scottie Scheffler is only one stroke adrift of the lead after 18 holes at the Travelers Championship

Scheffler, who turned 30 last week, went round TPC River Highlands in a bogey-free six-under 64.

The American is among a group of six players sharing second place, one behind his compatriot Eric Cole.

England's Matthew Fitzpatrick is also in that contingent, whilst recent PGA Championship winner Aaron Rai, Viktor Hovland and Justin Rose are also inside the top 10.

Tommy Fleetwood, Xander Schauffele and Robert MacIntyre are on three-under, with Shane Lowry - who sacked his caddie after the U.S. Open - on two-under.

Scheffler is searching for his second victory of the season and first since capturing the American Express in January.

He finished runner-up to Rory McIlroy at The Masters, tied for 14th at the PGA Championship and shared fourth place at last week's U.S. Open.

Scheffler, somehow, forced himself into contention at last week's third men's major after starting slowly but couldn't buy a putt in the final round as Wyndham Clark held on to secure his second gold medal amid a hostile crowd.

Scheffler told reporters before the Travelers Championship he thought the treatment Clark received at Shinnecock Hills was "tough" but stopped short of condemning the behaviour.

Asked how important it is to get off to a fast start here, Scheffler said: "When the scoring is lower it can be harder and harder to play catch up.

"I feel like when you play a golf course where even par's going to be the winning score at the end of the week there's always those days where somebody figures it out.

"When you look at the low rounds from last week's U.S. Open, there's still a few of 'em, or at least one guy seems to figure it out each day, so you feel like you can catch up a little bit easier.

"Sometimes here you get so far behind you can only shoot so low on some of these golf courses, so it's important to keep pace."

Scheffler is playing the first two rounds of the Travelers Championship alongside Sam Burns.

Burns finished runner-up to Clark last week and broke down in tears in the immediate aftermath as he paid tribute to his father.

"We've known each other a long time, so it's always fun," said Scheffler. "We actually hadn't played in competition in quite awhile.

"So it was fun being out there today. Sam played solid today as well, so hopefully we'll keep the momentum going for tomorrow."

Newly-crowned U.S. Open champion Clark is on two-under.

"They were finally rooting for me instead of against me, so we like the Connecticut fans," Clark said.

Clark, unsurprisingly, has not had the best preparation heading into the final signature event of the campaign.

"My energy is] obviously low," he said. "The biggest thing is I had like an allergic reaction to my left eye, it was puffy, so it was blurry a little bit.

"Outside of that, I kind of have energy, which I'm surprised about."
