Rory McIlroy is back to defend the Truist Championship, the latest $20m Signature Event on the PGA Tour.

McIlroy, who celebrated his 36th birthday on 4 May, is making his first individual start on the PGA Tour since becoming just the sixth player to complete the career grand slam at The Masters last month.

The World No.2 did compete in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans two weeks ago but that was alongside Shane Lowry in the PGA Tour's lone team event of the season. They were defending their title that week but went on to finish T12.

Record holder McIlroy is now looking to win the Truist Championship for the fifth time in his career, albeit on a completely different golf course and under a new title sponsor.

McIlroy won the first of 29 career PGA Tour titles to date at this tournament in 2010.

He also won it in 2015, 2021, 2024.

Why is the 2025 Truist Championship not taking place at Quail Hollow Club?

The Truist Championship used to be known as the Wells Fargo Championship, but Wells Fargo has now pulled the plug on its title sponsorship.

This tournament is also being staged away from its usual Quail Hollow Club setting this week.

Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course has been given the honour of stepping in for 2025.

That's because Quail Hollow Club is hosting the PGA Championship from 15-18 May.

The 2025 Truist Championship marks the sixth of eight Signature Events on the 2025 PGA Tour schedule.

A prize purse of $20m is up for grabs with a whopping $3.6m going to the champion.

There is no cut in this event and the field is limited to 72 players.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler has decided not to compete in the Truist Championship.

That's because he wants to take the week off before each of the four majors in 2025.

Scheffler chalked up his first win on the PGA Tour in 2025 with a commanding eight-shot victory on home turf at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson on Sunday.

The win left Phil Mickelson a little red-faced

Billy Horschel is the only other player in the world's top 25 not teeing it up in the Truist Championship.

Keith Mitchell, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland received invites into the field.

Erik van Rooyen was one of five players to quality for the Truist via the Aon Swing 5, but the South African still isn't fully convinced limited field, no-cut events are the way forwards on the PGA Tour.

"How honest do you want me to be?" said van Rooyen on Sunday. "I hate it..."
