Donald Trump leaves golf fans baffled with bizarre Adam Scott handshake at Presidents Cup

Donald Trump certainly made his presence felt at Medinah on Sunday – and his rather unusual handshake with Adam Scott was one of the more bizarre moments of the Presidents Cup.

The U.S. President arrived at the first tee ahead of the final day’s 12 singles matches as Team USA attempted to overturn a three-point deficit against Geoff Ogilvy’s Internationals.

Trump had already grabbed plenty of attention after an Air Force One flyover ahead of play, before receiving a mixture of cheers and jeers from the Medinah crowd as he made his way to the first tee.

After a brief speech, Trump greeted the players as they arrived for their matches. His handshake with Scott, however, immediately caught the eye.

Rather than a conventional handshake, Trump appeared to give the Australian a particularly firm grip before pulling Scott towards him in what looked like a brief tug-of-war between the pair.

The unusual exchange quickly became a talking point among golf fans on social media, with many amused by the apparent gamesmanship before Scott had even struck a shot.

Scott, an International veteran and one of the more experienced players on Ogilvy’s team, appeared to take the moment in his stride.

And there was plenty at stake when the Australian walked to the first tee.

The Internationals had produced one of the biggest surprises of the week by taking a 10.5-7.5 lead into Sunday’s singles, becoming the first International team to lead going into the final day of a Presidents Cup on American soil.

Scott was tasked with facing Patrick Cantlay in one of the 12 singles matches as the United States attempted to launch a comeback.

Ultimately, the handshake did not prove to be a sign of things to come for Scott.

Cantlay went on to beat the Australian 2&1, contributing another point to a remarkable American fightback.

The USA eventually took 9.5 points from a possible 12 on Sunday to overturn the deficit and win the Presidents Cup 17-13, securing an 11th consecutive victory in the competition.

Trump also received a public thank you from U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker afterwards.

“One last shout out to President Trump,” Snedeker said. 

“He told me he was going to bring some energy today, you guys need it, and I told him if we did this then he gets all the credit so thank you President Trump.”

For Scott, meanwhile, the bizarre first-tee moment was followed by disappointment on the course as the Internationals ultimately saw their hopes of a historic victory disappear during an extraordinary final day at Medinah.
