Rising PGA Tour star Jackson Koivun shuts down talk of Team USA call-up

Jackson Koivun says he still has more to prove before U.S. Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker makes his squad selections.

The 21-year-old has got the golf world buzzing after claiming his first PGA Tour title on only his third start as a professional. 

Koivun, formerly the number one amateur, took down Scottie Scheffler last Sunday to win the 3M Open by three shots.

His victory at TPC Twin Cities has already sparked suggestions in some quarters that Koivun should be a shoo-in for the United States Presidents Cup team as it will undoubtedly serve as valuable experience ahead of the 2027 Ryder Cup. 

But Koivun told Dan on Golf: "I've heard some talk, a little bit about it, but I feel like I still have a lot to prove to get really into that talk.

"I've given myself a nice runway to maybe make it into the playoffs and keep performing well, so we'll see further down the road."

Snedeker and his International counterpart, Geoff Ogilvy, will name their six captain's picks after the conclusion of the BMW Championship in August.

Six players will qualify automatically for the U.S and International team.

The 2026 Presidents Cup will take place at Medinah Country Club over 22-27 September.

One man who believes Koivun should absolutely be on the U.S. team is legendary commentator Jim Nantz.

Nantz told Golf on CBS after the conclusion of the 3M Open he believes Koivun will be rubbing shoulders with the elite for many decades. 

"We're about a month away from that team being put together and captain Brandt Snedeker will make a lot of great decisions, and he’ll get some captain's picks, but this kid is going to be a force for a long time," said Nantz.

"And I think it's nice sometimes to be able to say that you gave him a chance as a wildcard pick, a captain's pick, before he goes on a stretch of 25 years, whatever, where he's going to make the national teams on his own.

"That began to circle in my head when I was watching him in that final round."

Nantz added: "He had a great record as an amateur, as we all know, that included playing in match play events like the Walker Cup.

"Jackson Koivun is going to be on the scene and rubbing elbows with the upper echelon of the sport now for decades."

The United States has dominated the Presidents Cup, winning 13 of the 15 editions since the event began in 1994

The International team's only victory arrived in 1998, whilst the 2003 contest ended in a tie.
