Justin Rose reacts after being told he should become 2027 Ryder Cup captain
Justin Rose gives his early verdict on the 2027 European Ryder Cup captaincy after being urged by a quartet of golf legends to take the hotseat.
Justin Rose admits he would "love" to one day become European Ryder Cup captain but that he will have to wait and see whether it's at Adare Manor in 2027.
Rose, 45, was last week tipped by British golf legends Sir Nick Faldo, Ian Woosnam, Sam Torrance and Sandy Lyle to take the reins from Luke Donald.
While honoured to hear his name has been put forward for the captain's armband, Rose knows a lot can change in two years time.
Rose also knows his game is good enough to still compete with the world's best players having recently captured his 12th PGA Tour title at the FedEx St Jude Championship.
The victory saw Rose punch his ticket into a seventh European Ryder Cup team that will face the United States at Bethpage next month.
Rose wants to solely focus on the 2025 Ryder Cup before giving any consideration as to what might follow afterwards.
"It’s an interesting one", Rose said on the subject of the 2027 Ryder Cup captaincy while appearing on the Sky Sports Golf Podcast.
"If we were to go back a couple of years and think about what’s the pipeline of European Ryder Cup captains, I felt like that was a potential thought process for sure – and it could well still be a potential thought process. 2027 still feels like a long time away.
"But I think all of us probably need to have a sit down afterwards and just understand what’s best for the team, because that’s the most important thing first and foremost."
"What I’ve learnt by watching and observing Luke is how much hard work it takes.
"The Ryder Cup captaincy doesn’t start in 2027, it pretty much starts some time in 2026, so yeah, you’re right, where’s my game going to be, how much commitment do I have, where are my priorities with that.
"To answer your question, it’s so nice that my name’s even being put in the conversation and in consideration, and obviously should the opportunity arise one day at the right time, absolutely I’d love to do the job. We shall see."

Two years ago, Rose had to rely on a captain's pick to make the team.
Fast forward to 2025, and Rose earned one of six automatic spots on Donald's side alongside Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Bob MacIntyre, Tyrrell Hatton and Rasmus Hojgaard.
Donald will then announce his six picks to the world on Monday 1 September.
Looking ahead to his seventh appearance for the blue and yellow from 26-28 September, and Rose has implored European Ryder Cup captain Donald to hand him a bigger role compared to last time around in Rome.
"I don't know what my role will be, to be honest with you," said Rose ahead of the 2025 Ryder Cup.
"This could be a very balanced team, a very experienced team, so there might be less requirements in terms of the rookies and things like that.
"Obviously, in an away Ryder Cup, we're going to need a steady pair of hands all over. I think we're going to all be looking to each other.
"There's going to be a lot of solidarity required. So just leading by example, again, as best you can and obviously earning points.
"I think my game is probably in a better spot than it was in Rome. So there might be different requirements asked of me - I'm not sure.
"Last time I only played the two fourballs and the singles, so I'd like to get out a little bit more than that - if possible - this time around."
