Justin Rose has implored European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald to hand him a bigger role in the forthcoming contest at Bethpage Black.

Rose will make his seventh appearance for Team Europe over 26-28 September on the outskirts of New York.

The Englishman had to rely on a captain's pick from Donald two years ago and was perhaps cruelly overlooked for the record-breaking defeat at Whistling Straits by Padraig Harrington.

But Rose qualified automatically this time around courtesy of a strong season on the PGA Tour that saw him finish runner-up to Rory McIlroy at The Masters and enter the winner's circle for the 12th time in his career in Memphis.

"Just being a part of the Ryder Cup isn't what you're there for, you're there to earn points," Rose told Sky Sports.

"You're there to support the team. Hopefully the team can amass the amount of points to get the job done."

Rose played a crucial role in Europe's five-point victory in Rome.

He teamed up with Robert MacIntyre and the duo were unbeaten during the first two days.

The pair inflicted a 3&2 defeat on Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth and halved their match against Max Homa and Wyndham Clark.

Rose even sank a 20-foot putt on the 18th to help Europe retain their momentum, sparking wild scenes in Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.

The golfer is not sure what Role he will have in a few weeks' time, but believes his game is far superior to where it was two years ago.

But it's clear he wants to lead by example.

"I don't know what my role will be, to be honest with you," he added. "This could be a very balanced team, a very experienced team, so there might be less requirements in terms of the rookies and things like that.

"Obviously, in an away Ryder Cup, we're going to need a steady pair of hands all over. I think we're going to all be looking to each other.

"There's going to be a lot of solidarity required. So just leading by example, again, as best you can and obviously earning points.

"I think my game is probably in a better spot than it was in Rome. So there might be different requirements asked of me - I'm not sure.

"Last time I only played the two fourballs and the singles, so I'd like to get out a little bit more than that - if possible - this time around."

Donald will name his six captain's picks on 1 September following the conclusion of the Omega European Masters in Switzerland.

The qualification period has ended last week and Rasmus Hojgaard did what was required at the British Masters to pip Shane Lowry to the sixth and final automatic spot.

Hojgaard joins Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Rose, MacIntyre and Tyrrell Hatton in the team.

Ludvig Aberg, Viktor Hovland, Lowry, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka are expected to be named as Donald's picks.

Matt Wallace, Alex Noren, Harry Hall, Marco Penge and Aaron Rai are outsiders.

Wallace appears to believe he hasn't done enough
