Scottie Scheffler has confirmed he will withdraw from The Masters should his wife Meredith go into labour between now and the start of the final round.

Scheffler, 27, carded a 71 in the third round to take a one-shot lead into the final round at Augusta National.

The World No.1 finds himself at 7-under par and one shot clear of two-time major champion Collin Morikawa.

Scheffler is bidding to land his second Masters title in the last three years, as well as a third victory in his last four starts on the PGA Tour.

But the red-hot American has confirmed his wife Meredith will soon give birth to their first child, and the decision to leave The Masters will prove something of a no-brainer despite being in contention for a second major title.

Should Meredith go into labour from now and the start of his final round at 2.35pm on Sunday afternoon, then Scheffler will head back home to Texas to be with her and the birth of their first child.

This update was confirmed by golf reporter Jason Sobel following the third round.

Sobel tweeted: "Just spoke with Scottie Scheffler and he maintains that if his wife Meredith goes into labor between now and the start of the final round, he’ll withdraw in order to be there for the birth of their first child."

Scheffler confirmed earlier in the week that the baby's due date was 'a few weeks away'.

"I’ll be out of here," said Scheffler. "I think first child wins over many things in my life."

Scheffler punters will very much be hoping their man can hang around on Sunday as he takes a one-shot lead into the final round.

Other punters will likely have a different view.
