Paige Spiranac hit back at a golf fan who took aim at her tweet about Wyndham Clark following his maiden major victory at the US Open on Sunday.

Golf social media sensation Spiranac, 30, tweeted how she grew up playing golf with Clark, 29, when they were in Colorado.

Spiranac admitted how everyone even back then at the age of 13 knew Clark was destined for the big time in the professional game.

Clark carded a final-round 70 at Los Angeles Country Club to see out a narrow one-stroke victory over Rory McIlroy and seal his first major title at the US Open.

The American, who lost his mother to breast cancer 10 years ago, has now won twice in his last four starts on the PGA Tour.

Clark won his first PGA Tour title last month at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Clark is now set to move into the world's top 20 for the first time in his career, along with give himself the best possible chance to play his way into the US Ryder Cup team for the first time in his career in Italy this September.

But despite nicely heaping praise on Clark just moments after his maiden major victory, one golf fan took aim at Spiranac's tweet late on Sunday because he seemed to believe she wanted to 'make it all about her'.

Spiranac tweeted: "Wyndham Clark and I grew up playing junior golf together in Colorado. Everyone would always say he had something special and we all knew he'd make it. Now he's a major winner! Very cool moment."

Then in chimed a Twitter user called Aidan with a graphic of a man pointing in the mirror with a caption that read: "It's not about you. But you get in there and make it about you."

Paige then hit back: "I was adding a personal note to show how cool it is to watch someone be successful at every step of their career and how he was always a stand out player even back at age 13."
