Rory McIlroy smashed a tee box marker in frustration during the second round of the US Open at Oakmont Country Club.

McIlroy, 36, narrowly made the cut despite going on to card a 2-over 72 on day two.

The round leaves McIlroy with plenty of work to do in order to win a second US Open title and his second major of the season.

McIlroy was seen getting more and more frustrated as the second round progressed as he battled his way to make the cut.

The World No.2 tomahaked his club after an errant shot into the par-5 12th.

Then five holes later he decided to smash a tee box marker.

McIlroy flung his tee shot out to the right and into the greenside bunker on the short par-4 17th.

As his ball sailed into the dark Pennsylvania sky, McIlroy turned to his left and let his anger out.

McIlroy will now likely face a fine with the USGA following his unruly actions.

The Northern Irishman still went on to make a par down the 17th.

He then made a clutch birdie down the par-4 18th in order to guarantee his place for the weekend.

McIlroy carded a 72 to fall to 6-over par.

He now trails Sam Burns by nine shots heading into the third round.

McIlroy will be looking for a fast start when he returns to the course early on Saturday.

McIlroy once again shunned all media interviews after the second round for the second straight day.

He had three words for a USGA official when asked if he fancied speaking to reporters.

The Ulsterman did exactly the same all four tournament days at last month's PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club.

Scottie Scheffler was also seen getting a little hot under the collar on day two at the US Open.

Scheffler looked extremely unhappy about the state of his golf swing while on the range with his coach and caddie following a 71.

The World No.1 finds himself two shots better off than McIlroy at 4-over par.
