US OPEN ROUND THREE LIVE

Sam Burns will take a one-shot lead into the third round of the 2025 US Open at Oakmont.

The American carded a sensational 5-under 65 on Friday to lead by one stroke over early pacesetter J.J. Spaun.

Spaun could only add a 2-over 72 to his opening 66 but is still among only four players that are under par after 36 holes in Pennsylvania.

Norway's Viktor Hovland (68) is right in the thick of it at 1-under.

The European Ryder Cup star raced out of the blocks on Friday and briefly trailed by one stroke but endured a rocky back nine.

He has been struggling for form since his stunning 2023 season which saw him win numerous times on the PGA Tour.

"It's going to get tougher and tougher," Hovland told reporters of the brutal conditions.

Brooks Koepka, former Masters champion Adam Scott and the in-form Ben Griffin are also inside the top-10.

France's Victor Perez - who made a hole in one at the par-3 sixth - is also in contention.

South Africa's Thriston Lawrence did reach 5-under but dropped seven strokes over 13 holes to drop down the leaderboard.

The horn blew to to suspend play just as he was lining up a four-foot par putt on the ninth to sign for a 74.

World No.1 and heavy tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler is among a group of 12 on 4-over par after scrapping his way to a 71.

That cluster of players includes former US Open champion and Masters winner Jon Rahm.

Scheffler said the way he was hitting it there was every chance that he could've gone home early.

"I battled pretty hard to stay in there," he said. "Around this golf course I don't think by any means I'm out of the tournament."

Masters winner Rory McIlroy managed to make the cut by finding some late birdies.

The Northern Irishman carded a 2-over 74 and sits on 6-over par.

But he will likely make the headlines for the wrong reasons over two angry outbursts on the course.

McIlroy tossed his club in anger on the 12th after a loose iron shot and also smashed a tee box marker on the 17th

The latter is likely going to see McIlroy fined.

Defending champion misses the cut

Bryson DeChambeau was also among several notables names to miss the cut.

DeChambeau, who pipped the aforementioned McIlroy to the US Open title 12 months ago on the 72nd hole with an otherworldly up and down from the sand, could only manage a 7-over 77 on Saturday.

The 31-year-old's card contained eight bogeys, one double bogey, three birdies and six pars.

He headed straight for the range once he finished his round.

DeChambeau wasn't the only high-profile name to miss the cut.

Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, Phil Mickelson, Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Tommy Fleetwood, Joaquin Niemann, Sepp Straka, Justin Thomas, Justin Rose and Shane Lowry are also going home early.
