Scottie Scheffler was spotted going back to basics with his coach after he began his first attempt at completing the career grand slam at the U.S. Open with a two-over 72.

Scheffler was among the early starters at a windy Shinnecock Hills in Long Island, New York.

The American world number needs this tournament to join Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, Gene Sarazen and Rory McIlroy in the history books but will need to make sure his second round doesn't get away from him to avoid missing the cut.

Scheffler was spotted having an animated conversation with his coach Randy Smith some 90 minutes after he completed the opening round, which took the 29-year-old, the defending champion JJ Spaun and an amateur star Mason Howell five-and-a-half hours to complete.

Scheffler's round contained four bogeys, one double bogey and four birdies.

At times, he was hitting good shots but not getting rewarded.

A wedge from 110 yards found the middle of the 13th green but his ball spun and rolled off the front.

The double bogey arrived at the eighth after he hit his tee shot into the rough and could only advance his second into a bunker 40 yards from the hole.

He then three-putted.

"Today it felt like a day where a lot of good shots were going to get punished is what it felt like," said Scheffler.

"You had to be hitting a great shot if you wanted to avoid a punishment. I think good would put you in some tough spots.

"Overall, it was a really challenging day. If you told me when I was staring at my par putt on nine that I would post two-over today, I would definitely have taken it at the time.

"Overall it was a good battle. [I'll go and] get some rest, and we'll see how the course changes over the next day."

The first round of the US Open was delayed for more than two hours due to fog.

Scheffler said he spent the first part of his round trying to adjust for the extra moisture on his golf ball.

"After the fog kind of cleared, the ball started drying up," he said. "I don't feel like the conditions changed too much. It was just windy."

There were concerns with how the course was going to be setup given what transpired here the last time the U.S. Open was staged at Shinnecock.

Some players felt the conditions turned from difficult to downright unfair.

Scheffler said the greens were softer than he expected, adding: "But I think with the wind that was forecasted, you always want to err on the side of caution.

"I think the last thing that they wanted was having balls blowing off greens.

"So they might have put a little extra juice on them last night to slow them down. Most of the greens have all been fine.

"I think there's a couple greens where there's so much pitch that you get the wind going down the slope, it can roll off pretty easily.

"I would say it was probably maybe a little softer than I thought."
