Jon Rahm given crystal clear message by Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald

Luke Donald says he has given Jon Rahm no assurances whatsoever that the Spaniard will be selected for the 2025 European Ryder Cup team.

European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald says he has given Jon Rahm no assurances he will be selected for the 2025 showdown.

Rahm made clear in his news conference ahead of the PGA Championship he wants to make the team on merit.

But LIV Golf's marquee signing of 2024 knows his opportunities to earn points will be limited to the remaining majors.

Rahm will also be able to fit in a few more events on the DP World Tour's schedule.

On Tuesday, the 2023 Masters champion repeatedly dodged a reporter's question at Quail Hollow over whether he's been told not to worry.

Donald told scribes in the media centre on Wednesday it is too soon for anyone to be told their spot in the team is secure.

"I haven't given anyone the nod," Donald said. "I think it's a little bit early for that.

"We have, very in-depth stats. We know exactly how these players are playing.

"We have a great idea of where they stack up against each other and against the U.S.

"But I certainly think it's a little too early to be giving anyone like firm assurances right now.

"We have three majors, elevated events, plenty of other events, Rolex Series events to play.

"I want them to go out and feel like they go and earn it. Let's go in and play well."

Of Rahm, Donald said: "He's one of the best players in the world, and I would expect him to be on that team, but I certainly haven't given him those assurances.

"He still needs to keep going and playing just like everyone else.

"Again, no assurances have been given right now."

"That's a question for Guy Kinnings"

When the likes of Henrik Stenson, Graeme McDowell, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia joined LIV Golf, the ageing European Ryder Cup stars handed in their resignations from their home circuit.

Garcia has since got his membership back after paying off his LIV-related fines.

Rahm and his LIV teammate Tyrrell Hatton decided not to resign their memberships and have also taken the position not to pay their fines.

Both golfers have appealed and it is understood their cases won't be heard until after the 2025 showdown at Bethpage Black.

There is a scenario, though, where the case is heard before the biennial showdown.

Given the precedent that has been set, it is not unreasonable to suggest Rahm and Hatton would both lose their appeals and therefore not be eligible for selection.

Donald said he's had 'zero conversations' over when the appeals will be heard.

"That's a question for Guy Kinnings," Donald said of the DP World Tour's chief executive.

"I do not get involved with the politics of that.

"So my concentration is to get the best 12 players to New York, and hopefully everyone is eligible."
