England's Lottie Woad opened her first major as a professional with a lacklustre level-par 72 in the first round of the AIG Women's Open at Royal Porthcawl.

Woad, 21, entered the season's final major of the season in Wales off the back of landing her first LPGA and second LET title on her pro debut at the Women's Scottish Open.

She became just the third player in LPGA history to achieve such a feat.

It also marked her second victory in the space of three weeks having recently landed her first LET title at the Women's Irish Open.

Woad exchanged four birdies with four bogeys in an opening 72 on day one of the AIG Women's Open

The highlight of Woad's first round was a tramliner birdie on the par-5 6th.

The opening level-par 72 leaves Woad just outside the top 50 after the first 18 holes and five shots off the pace set by Japanese duo Rio Takeda and Eri Okayama on 5-under par.

England's Charley Hull did not have particularly high expectations entering the AIG Women's Open, and it showed on day one with a sluggish 1-over 73.

That was the same score as defending champion and World No.3 Lydia Ko.

World No.1 Nelly Korda fared much better with a solid 2-under 70, which was matched by World No.2 Jeeno Thitikul.

Wales' home favourite Darcey Harry also went round in 70, while Lydia Hall, the only other Welsh contender, carded a level-par 72.

England's Mimi Rhodes is also in contention for a first major title on her AIG Women's Open debut at 3-under par.
