Daniel Hillier says he is 'gobsmacked' after he produced a scintillating finish to win the British Masters at The Belfry and earn his spot in the 151st Open Championship field.

The 24-year-old pro, from New Zealand, reached a total score of 10-under par after 72 holes to defeat America's Gunner Wiebe and England's Oliver Wilson by two strokes.

His maiden victory means that he takes the top prize of £468,000 and is now in the field at Royal Liverpool later this month for the final major of the year.

Last year this tournament also witnessed an exhilarating finish when Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen made an eagle and then drained a monster birdie putt at the last to win the title.

Hillier's was equally impressive as he went eagle, birdie, eagle from 15 to 17.

He finished with a par, with his second shot at the last landing near the trophy, which was described as an 'omen'.

Hillier told the media:

"I'm gobsmacked. I think it's going to take me a while to process, to be honest.
"Early on in the day I was not feeling it at all. I was a little bit uncomfortable with the driver, didn't have many chances but obviously knew there were some chances coming in.
"I didn't think I would take them that well, but obviously pretty ecstatic.
"I'm not going to lie, I was definitely looking at the leaderboard and seeing my name up there and thinking about what it would be like to finish it off but it's all a bit of a blur really."

Hillier said he will now have to rush to change his plans to make his Open debut. Not that he is complaining, he said.

The pre-tournament favourite, Justin Rose, had to settle for a share of fourth place with Scottish duo Calum Hill and Ewen Ferguson.
