Rory McIlroy may have become the first player to win three FedEx Cups in August, but at Wentworth on Thursday, he showed that he is still human.

Rory McIlroy could only laugh when he hit a one-of-a-kind shot on the 8th hole in the first round of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The 2014 tournament champion was stuck in thick rough when attempting to hit his ball over the narrow water stream and on to the green from 128 yards at the Surrey venue.

He took a typical McIlroy swipe at the ball, but the little white object didn't agree. The ball travelled barely a yard and popped up just in front of his feet.

When you see a pro hit such a poor shot, you wait for the anger to be unleashed. But McIlroy showed no such anger. He merely let out a laugh and a smile.

Unfortunately for the Northern Irishman, this mishap led to his first bogey of the week. Before this point, he'd made back-to-back birdies on the 5th and 6th holes.

McIlroy also came second at the DP World Tour's flagship event in 2018 behind Francesco Molinari. He enjoys playing at the course which is acting like a battleground this week amidst the rise of the LIV Golf Series.

The 33-year-old joined Billy Horschel and Jon Rahm in saying there are certain players who shouldn't be allowed to participate this week. Horschel went as far as naming Jason Kokrak, Abraham Ancer and Talor Gooch as those who are purely playing for world ranking points.

During his press conference on Wednesday, McIlroy revealed that he doesn't have much of a relationship with the likes of Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter anymore after moving to the Saudi-backed series.

However, he declared that "golf will survive" the current divide that has been caused by the new league funded by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.
