The question of whether or not you need to change your golf balls in the winter is one that perplexes many golfers, and for good reason. Winter golf is hard enough as it is given the onset of the wind and the rain, making scratching around for your ball in the frost and the snow an unenviable task.

But does, as common wisdom generally states, cold weather actually affect your golf ball's performance? Not really. According to a blog post from Titleist's golf ball R&D team, the idea that you need to switch to a lower compression ball in the winter is, in fact, a "common misconception", and that the most you'll gain by doing so is a few yards of carry for every 20°F that the temperature drops.

As such, unless you're looking to squeeze every last drop of performance out of your gear, picking a good winter golf ball is more a matter of cosmetics over actual performance – ensuring you invest in a colour that'll stand out amidst frost, snow and glare.

Thankfully, just about every major brand and model of golf ball has a high-vis option perfectly suited for playing in the colder months, from classic yellow options to more vivid colour combinations that look thoroughly unique without sacrificing the performance you're used to.

Here are our favourites you can get right now for every level of player.

Titleist Pro V1 Yellow

Titleist Pro V1/Pro V1x

Price: £52

Still very much the benchmark by which all other golf balls are measured, Titleist's Pro V1 and Pro V1x models are the most popular balls on tour by some margin and have been the most desirable model of ball at the amateur level for going on two decades.

The Pro V1 hasn't undergone many cosmetic updates since its inception in the early '2000s, still available as it ever was in a simple choice of white and yellow, the latter of which is shaded with a slightly more green tinge to stand out in poor conditions.

Much like the Pro V1, the TP5 comes in a winter-ready version with its urethane rendered in a vivid neon yellow that's slightly more matte to provide more contrast in damp, glossy grass.
