Amazon Basics just launched a beginner-friendly golf ball at a wild price point

Priced at less than $15 for a dozen, Amazon's new golf ball might just up-end the beginner golf ball market.

Finding the best golf ball for a beginner golfer is as much pursuit of economy as it is performance.

Despite the differences that individual brands and models have to each other in the two piece golf ball category, there's very little to distinguish one from another in the hands of a developing golfer. Generally, anything that has an attractive price and a soft feel on the course will get you a long way there.

A new entry into the market, however, might just be a game-changer in the segment. And it's come from what one might call a fairly unlikely space. Amazon themselves have entered the game, bringing the fight to the Callaway Supersofts and Titlist TruFeels of the world with their own affordable soft-feel golf ball.

And priced at less than $15 for a dozen, it could be a true shock to the golf ball market.

Called the Core Soft, it delivers pretty much everything we've come to expect from the type of soft-feel two-piece golf ball that's become the default choice of beginner golfers and seniors in the last two decades.

It has a low-compression core to deliver a softer feel, a straighter flight off the tee and plenty of distance for those with lower swing, speeds, along with an Ionomer cover that Amazon says aids with greenside spin and control. This has the dual benefit of aiding feel with the putter, generating a softer sensation off the putter face.

Aesthetically, the core soft is as minimal as you'd expect from any Amazon basics product. It has a simple Amazon arrow logo denoting the brand, as well as a simple alignment aid to help with lining up putts. Nothing spectacular here, but we expect we'll soon be finding plenty of them out on course before too long.

The true selling point, of course, is the price. The Amazon Basics Core Soft is available for pre-order now for around £17 per dozen, with the option of getting a two-dozen pack for around $24 – or around the price of a dozen Callaway SuperSofts. A brand new box for a dollar per ball is nothing to be sniffed at.

We're yet to receive these for testing, but given plenty will be keen to see if the performance is as good as the price, we'll be sure to get a review of these up as soon as we can.
