Brooks Koepka's putting woes continue after reportedly breaking his old putter last weekend
The American has a new flat stick in the bag for this weekend's PGA Championship, but once again struggled on the lightning-quick greens at Aronimink.
While Brooks Koepka's return to equipment free agency has been the prevailing equipment story in his season so far, a constant bugbear of his otherwise resurgant form has been his performance with the putter.
The American has consistenly ranked among the worst putters on tour since his return to the PGA Tour at the start of this season, leading him to try an array of different putters in an effort to find some comfort and flow on the greens.
Things got so bad at last weekend's Truist Championship that, after a final round which saw him give up a total of 2.5 strokes to the field on the greens, he reportedly broke the TaylorMade Spider Tour Putter he'd been using up until that point.
"I feel good. Every round just seems to be the worst I can shoot," Koepka said in a pre-PGA Championship presser. "Putter is absolutely horrendous. Ball striking is absolutely phenomenal.
"I feel comfortable with the putter. A little bit of speed, a little bit of confidence. That kind of sums it up. It's just been miss after miss. It's tough to build any confidence when you're not putting well."
"That's been the story of the year. Hopefully we can figure out a way to turn this around."
Koepka was spied testing multiple putters during practice at Aroniminnk earlier this week, ultimately making the switch into a different TaylorMade Spider Model. Namely, it's a plumbers-neck variant of the Tour V shape that Collin Morikawa also experimented with in an effort to fix his own downturn in form with the putter.
However it seems not to have paid off. On the lightning-quick greens in Pennsylvania, Koepka ranked dead-last in the field for putting, registering 32 putts and losing two strokes on the rest of the field.
Thankfully Koepka's ball striking, which has been among the best on tour in the last few weeks, made up for it. The 36-year-old sits tied for 15th going into round two at -1.
