Bryson DeChambeau shoots low to take Shriners Hospitals for Children Open lead

Bryson DeChambeau proved why he's one of the most in-form golfers on the planet right now after firing the lowest opening round of his PGA Tour career to take the lead at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin.

The recently crowned US Open champion continued his rich vein of form in Las Vegas on Thursday, shooting 9-under par in an opening round that featured five consecutive birdies and not a single bogey.

DeChambeau's opening 62 leaves him one-stroke clear of his American compatriots Harold Varner III, Austin Cook, Scott Harrington, Patrick Cantlay and Nate Lashley.

Had he holed his eagle putt at the last, DeChambeau would have shot his lowest ever PGA Tour score, but the World No.6 is confident that if he continues playing in this manner, his next win won't be far away.

"When I'm playing great golf I feel like I've got a great chance to win every week, but that doesn't mean that somebody else is going to play better than me, right?" said DeChambeau.

"So - or they have a chance too, right? So either way there's opportunities for them to play better than me, when I'm playing my best, I'm not going to throw that out of the equation, but what I will say is I'm playing well and I feel like I have my golf swing under control and putting well, making a lot of putts.

"I feel like I can shoot low on a lot of golf courses and usually that wins tournaments."

DeChambeau started his round on the 10th hole and a solid start saw him go two-under through his opening five. What followed was five consecutive birdies from the 15th round to the 1st, before a run of five pars, leaving DeChambeau 7-under with three holes to play.

At the 381-yard par-4 7th - DeChambeau's 16th hole - the 27-year-old took an extremely aggressive line over the trees and his ball reached the green, allowing him to two-putt for another birdie.

DeChambeau's final hole, the par-5 9th, saw him reach the green in two, as he did for all three par-5's at TPC Summerlin. The eagle putt just missed, but a tap-in birdie put DeChambeau at 9-under to take the lead going into Friday's second round.

"It was a great day to play well.

"There's no wind out here for the most part and I feel like you can bomb it everywhere and get wedges close. And I was lucky to make a lot of putts.

"I didn't hit it great today, but I still played really, really good and I'm excited for that," added DeChambeau, who won this event two years ago.
