Oosthuizen gives PING perfect start to 2012

PING staffer Louis Oosthuizen defended his Africa Open in style with a tournament record 27-under par at East London Golf Club.

The South African, who has finished no worse than eighth in his last six events, fired four sub-70 rounds, highlighted by a sizzling 11-under 62 on day two.

Oosthuizen relied heavily on his PING Rapture V2 and PING S56 irons to rank inside the top ten in driving distance (292.1 yards) and greens in regulation (81.9%).

But it was the club that has seemingly let the 2010 Open champion down in recent weeks that ensured he finished the week two strokes clear of charging compatriots Tjaart Van der Walt and Retief Goosen.

The 29-year-old, who finished the week sixth in putts per round (27.3) with his PING Scottsdale blade, rolled home numerous putts outside ten-feet, including a 50-foot bomb for eagle on Friday.

And Oosthuizen saved his best for the penultimate hole when burying home a 30-footer for birdie, while his nearest challenger made bogey.

The South African’s winning total ranks two strokes off the European Tour record set by his elder statesman Ernie Els at the 2003 Johnnie Walker Classic.
