England’s Ashley Chesters is gearing up for one of the biggest weeks of his golfing life as he represents the EGU at this week’s biennial Simon Bolivar Cup in Venezuala.

The 22-year-old from Hawkstone Park, who will join compatriot Sam Claridge of Harpenden Common for the 72-hole strokeplay event, revealed he cannot wait to tee up at the sun-kissed Caracas Country Club on Wednesday.

“I am extremely excited by the prospect of playing in Venezuala,” Chesters, who won the Lee Westwood Trophy and finished fourth in the Midland Open Amateur this season, told Golfmagic in an exclusive interview.

“It will be great to get away from the cold conditions and enjoy some sunshine. I don’t know what to expect from the course or the field, but I’m going to go out there and give it my all, just as Sam will do.

“I’ve had a brilliant season thus far but this will be my first competitive tournament for some time, so I’m eager to get back in the swing of things.”

Claridge, 20, a member of last year’s England A squad who is among the invitees to train with the main squad, started 2011 in imperious form winning the Berkhamsted Trophy, before finishing eighth in the Tillman Trophy and reaching the quarter-finals of the English Amateur.

The Simon Bolivar Cup, staged in honour of the great liberator of Venezuala, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, is decided over 72 holes of strokeplay with the aggregate score of both the players to count. There is also an individual award.
