In case you missed it, Cameron Smith went on a bit of an adventure during the first LIV Golf League event of 2023.

Smith, 29, went rock climbing in the first round on No. 12 at El Camaleón Golf Course at Mayakoba.

His tee shot was wild. So wild, in fact, that his Titleist Pro V1x nestled in the bushes up on a cliff on the right-hand side of the fairway.

The amazing thing was that Smith eventually hit from near this spot after a lengthy back-and-forth with the rules official.

My favourite part from this exchange was Smith replying as you might expect after climbing up to his ball.

Rules official: "How you doing, mate?"
Cameron Smith: "Good, mate."

Their conversation lasted a few minutes. David Feherty chimed in with:

"Anytime your caddie has to chuck you a club it can't be good."

Speaking of Feherty, the commentator was called out for his claim that LIV Golf commissioner Greg Norman was 'the most recognisable athlete on the planet' in the 80s and 90s.

But back to the topic of our article and to cut a long story short, Smith was told his lateral relief from the bush was two club lengths and that included going downwards.

Smith eventually opted to drop behind the bush and from that spot went on to make a bogey.

Interestingly, PGA Tour pro Zac Blair pointed out that he received a different ruling to Smith when the same thing happened to him.

The PGA Tour had played Mayakoba for 16 years but the LIV Golf League swooped to steal the Norman-designed course.

Over the weekend, reports emerged that those in charge at the resort were open to the idea of hosting the PGA Tour and the breakaway circuit.

Smith eventually finished T-5 in Mayakoba at 6-under. The reigning Open champion pocketed $887,5000 for his efforts.

His Ripper GC team finished fifth. Smith also hit this incredible shot from a cart path:

Smith will be back in action for LIV over 17-20 March at The Gallery Golf Club in Tucson, U.S.
