LIV Golf League 2023: Players, results, schedule, FAQ

Professional golf entered a new era when the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series launched in the summer of 2022.

What followed was pure chaos as the golf tour signed PGA Tour stars such as Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson for mind-boggling fees.

Other huge names followed. The litigation began and fast-forward to February 2023 and the league embarked upon their second campaign in Mexico.

If you didn't know, the LIV Golf League consists of 12 teams of four players. There is a concurrent individual competition.

Each LIV Golf League event begins with a shotgun start with the field of 48 players starting on a different hole. There are no cuts.

In 2023, there will be 14 events. LIV's 'beta test' year had eight events which concluded with a $50m team championship.

The league will carry a total prize purse of $405m, up from $255m in 2022.

In this article, GolfMagic lists everything you need to know about the 2023 LIV Golf League.

LIV Golf League FAQ

How did LIV Golf begin?

Greg Norman teamed up with an entity known as LIV Golf Investments in October 2022.

A short while later, the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series was announced.

Seven $25m invite-only tournaments were confirmed, along with a $50m team championship.

Norman previously contended that LIV Golf was not created to rival the PGA Tour.

But in the early days had signed multiple major champions to their roster.

What does LIV Golf stand for?

The LIV isn't an acronym. It is the Roman numeral of 54, which is the number of holes played in each event.

The number is also the lowest score a golfer would receive if they birdied every hole on a par-72 course.

Who owns LIV Golf?

LIV Golf is funded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

The Saudi government initially pledged $400m to start the league but have since spent nearly $1bn in acquiring players.

It has been reported the PIF will invest as much as $2bn in their first two years.

Why all the controversy?

Critics say Saudi Arabia is attempting to use sport as a means to soften their reputation globally, in a practice known as sportswashing.

Human rights campaigners argue players involved with LIV are complicit in this and are accepting blood money.

What were the consequences for playing?

The PGA Tour suspended players who played in LIV Golf's first event at Centurion Club in June 2022.

That prompted Phil Mickelson and 10 other golfers to file an antitrust lawsuit.

Can LIV players participate in the majors?

This was a hot topic of debate but it has now been confirmed by the governing bodies of the four major championships that those LIV players that have qualified or are otherwise exempt will not be barred from playing.

How do I watch LIV Golf?

LIV Golf announced a multi-year broadcast deal with U.S. TV network The CW.

You can find out how to watch LIV Golf from your location on the official LIV Golf Plus app.

Does LIV Golf have sponsors?

LIV Golf announced in February that EasyPost, a logistical and commerce company would become their first global partner.
