Tiger Woods won't be playing in The Open at Royal Liverpool next month

Tiger Woods will not be making the trip to Royal Liverpool for next month's Open Championship, according to Sports Illustrated's Bob Harig.

It will be the 47-year-old's third straight missed major championship of 2023, after missing both the PGA Championship last month and this week's US Open as he recovers from ankle surgery.

Woods, who's won 15 majors in his career, did play in April's Masters, but withdrew ahead of the third round.

Just over a week later, it was announced via his Twitter that Woods had undergone a "subtalar fusion procedure" for arthritis in his ankle.

Woods had been suffering from plantar fasciitis since late last season, which had kept him out of his own Hero World Challenge in December.

The 82-time PGA Tour winner has played on-and-off over the past few years as he recovers from serious injuries from his February 2021 car accident.

"We have been advised that he won’t be playing at Hoylake," said an R&A spokesman via email to Harig on Friday. "We wish Tiger all the best with his recovery."

After the accident, Woods made his miraculous return to professional golf at the 2022 Masters Tournament the following season, ultimately finishing 47th in an incredible showing at Augusta National.

He then played in both the PGA Championship and Open Championship, though he recorded a third-round withdrawal and a missed cut.

Woods has played in just two events so far in 2023 - the Genesis Invitational in February and The Masters in April. He has not played since his surgery.

Three of Woods' 15 career major titles were at the Open Championship, one of which was accomplished at Royal Liverpool.

Last year, Cameron Smith won the 150th Open at St Andrews, defeating Cameron Young by one stroke and Rory McIlroy by two.
