A savvy golf ball collector has taken advantage of a UK auction house howler by purchasing an apparent Tom Watson signed golf ball that was actually a signed Tiger Woods golf ball.

The shrewd golf fan paid just $43 for what the auction house believed to be a signed Titleist ball by eight-time major champion Watson.

But as it turned out, the Titleist golf ball was actually signed by 15-time major champion Woods.

The lucky collector has since sold the ball for $3,037 at Golden Age Auctions.

The Collectibles Guru confirmed the news via Twitter:

While you might think it's an easy mistake given their initials are 'TW', if the UK auction house had actually done their homework, the signatures of Woods and Watson look entirely different. At least if you look on Google.

Woods played a wound Titleist Professional 90 golf ball in his early days on the PGA Tour.

He then switched to a solid-core Nike Tour Accuracy ball, among others from the brand, before then signing with Bridgestone in 2016 after Nike shut down its equipment business to focus solely on shoes and apparel.

Woods not so long ago revealed an industry top secret on his golf balls.

Some knew about it, while others had no idea.

The former World No.1 let the cat out of the bag when talking about why he made the switch from Nike Golf to Bridgestone.

Woods said:

"What people don't realise is that Bridgestone made the Nike golf ball for a number of years.
"It's a great ball and making the switch wasn't that hard."

Woods last week confirmed he was making an equipment switch for the first time in 20 years

Ahead of this week's PNC Championship where he will join forces with his 13-year-old son Charlie, Woods has changed to the Bridgestone Tour B X golf ball from the Tour B XS model.

The Tour B X ball is built to spin less which will help the 46-year-old gain more distance.

News also emerged this week from Golden Age Auctions how a signed Sunday Red Masters Nike Golf shirt that was worn by Woods at the 2010 Masters sold for absolutely huge money

But that was nothing compared to the sale of his 'Tiger Slam' irons, which went for life-changing money!

On the subject of Woods and Watson, it's certainly fair to say the two have never seen eye-to-eye down the years.

From the cursing and slamming of clubs to the detached disdain, Watson has been troubled by Woods' antics for a while.

Golf is a gentleman's game and players should be acting accordingly in the eyes of Watson.

"I feel that he has not carried the same stature that other great players that have come along like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Byron Nelson, the Hogans, in the sense that there was language and club throwing on the golf course," Watson once said.

GolfMagic even once heard from a former European Ryder Cup captain how Watson reacted strongly when hearing Woods had been "demanding team orders and throwing his weight around in the US Ryder Cup team-room."

Watson was having none of it.

The eight-time major champion has rarely come out and expressed his honest opinion of Woods, but he did once use a tongue-in-cheek response of "Tiger doesn't need my advice."

Watson was also a bit miffed ahead of the 2014 Ryder Cup when Woods withdrew through injury.

While Woods' statement made it sound like he had contacted captain Watson, he said he only learned of Woods' withdrawal after calling him.

GolfMagic caught up with Watson to get his views on Woods last year.
