The 2022-2023 PGA Tour season begins this week with the Fortinet Championship in California, going up against LIV Golf Chicago

Max Homa, now a four-time winner, is the defending champion at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa.

In last year's tournament, Homa capitalised on a mistake by Maverick McNealy when he made a costly double bogey at the 71st hole to win what was at the time his third PGA Tour title.

Homa, now 31 years old, went on to have an impressive season, claiming another victory at the Wells Fargo Championship at TPC Potomac.

You may remember that was the scene of Sergio Garcia's epic outburst of anger towards a rules official before he switched over to LIV Golf.

How times have changed in professional golf since then.

Homa finished off his season with an impressive T-5 finish at the Tour Championship at East Lake for his biggest ever pay day of $2.75m.

The field is not the strongest you will see this season. Typically, these earlier events in the season have fields occupied by the rank-and-file players who are trying to gain some FedEx Cup points early.

Rory McIlroy, the reigning FedEx Cup champion, is not playing this week. He's making his debut at the Italian Open at next year's Ryder Cup venue.

That being said, there is still fair chunk of change up for grabs. The Fortinet Championship has a prize purse of $8m, which is up by $1m from last year.

The winner will take home $1.44m.

In the field, the highest-ranked player is Hideki Matsuyama. He has reportedly decided to snub LIV (for now at least).

The PGA Tour Rookie of the Year nominee Sahith Theegala is also playing.
