Popular pro retires from DP World Tour at Omega European Masters
France's Mike Lorenzo-Vera is making his 285th and final DP World Tour appearance at this week's Omega European Masters in Switzerland.
Popular golf pro Mike Lorenzo-Vera will retire from the DP World Tour at this week's Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre GC in Crans Montana, Switzerland.
Lorenzo-Vera, 40, is making his 285th start on the DP World Tour at the Omega European Masters.
The Frenchman has never managed to win on the circuit but he did win once at the 2007 Apulia San Domenico Grand Final on the Challenge Tour.
Lorenzo-Vera took an extended break from the DP World Tour last season in a bid to protect his mental health.
He then confirmed his retirement from the game earlier this season in April.
But he wanted to ensure his final event was a special one at his favourite setting in the mountains.
"I am feeling great," Lorenzo-Vera told the DP World Tour on Tuesday.
"I have brought the family here – my kids and my mother are here, some friends are here as well. Great support, we are just here to enjoy it.
"The game is not too bad [too] apparently. I played pretty good golf yesterday so we will try to play until Sunday. That’s the principle [aim]."
Lorenzo-Vera explained to the DP World Tour that this week carries even greater significance for him and his family as his father sadly passed away while he was on the 1st hole in the first round at the 2015 Omega European Masters.
"It's a very special week for me as I lost my Dad 10 years ago when I was here on the 1st fairway during the first round, so having my mother here is going to feel very special and having the kids here is going to be absolutely beautiful."
Lorenzo-Vera progressed to as high as 64th in the Official World Golf Rankings at one stage during 2019.
He made seven major appearances with his best result a T16 at the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage, which is of course the venue for next month's Ryder Cup.
Lorenzo-Vera was particularly critical of a number of European players who defected from the DP World Tour and PGA Tour over to LIV Golf in 2022.
The Omega European Masters represents the last chance for a number of players to throw their hat into the ring for a last-minute captain's pick on Luke Donald's Ryder Cup team.
Alex Noren, who won last week's British Masters, Nicolai Hojgaard and Marco Penge likely have the best chances of anyone competing in Switzerland of earning a captain's pick.
