Tommy Fleetwood snatched the 36-hole lead at the DP World India Championship

The 34-year-old Englishman backed up an opening 68 with a sublime 8-under 64 on Friday at Delhi Golf Club to reach 12-under par.

Fleetwood, who secured his first win in the United States in August before helping Europe lift the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black last month, did not drop a shot in his second round.

He leads former Open champion and his European teammate Shane Lowry by one stroke heading into the penultimate round.

America's Brian Harman, also a major winner, is also on the same score as Lowry. England's Brandon Robinson-Thompson is also well-positioned in the top-10.

Masters champion Rory McIlroy made a small climb up the leaderboard on Friday, carding his second successive round of 69 to reach 6-under.

Fleetwood played the first two rounds of the $4m DP World Tour event with Lowry and Europe's Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald.

"Unbelievable three-ball," Fleetwood told Sky Sports after his round. "I think because you're so comfortable with each other, you do your own thing.

"It's always like a bonus when you're with two guys that you're really close with.

"Shane actually told me about the draw and I was really pleased. It has been a great two days.

"I feel like if I'm playing with Shane for the next two days, I'll be doing something right probably."

Fleetwood managed to put circles on his scorecard at 1, 4, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 18.

Despite making it look "easy", Fleetwood said that Delhi Golf Club is giving players in the field a headache.

McIlroy is playing without a driver whilst Fleetwood hasn't hit anything more than his 5-wood off the tee.

"It's just such a unique challenge for all of us," he said.

"I haven't hit anything more than my 5-wood. The one hole where I'd hit more is 18, but you get to that and you're like, 'well, I haven't hit one, and I don't really feel that comfortable with it'.

"It's such a unique challenge, and the greens are firming out a little bit and the pins have been tricky. It's been very, very enjoyable.

"It's a test of patience when you're not quite on it because it's one of those courses, you get a few of them where you feel if you hit it good off the tee you're going to have some short irons and wedges and feel like you've always got a chance of going on a run.

"It's such a waiting game. You've got to be very patient. It's been a great test."
