Tyrrell Hatton cracks up golf reporters with all-time boozy Ryder Cup story

Tyrrell Hatton opened up on his epic Ryder Cup celebrations in the aftermath of Europe's 203 victory at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome.

Tyrrell Hatton played a key part in Europe's Ryder Cup success story two years ago.

The Englishman struck a formidable partnership with Jon Rahm at Marco Simone, with the pair winning both of their foursomes matches.

Hatton also partnered Viktor Hovland in the four-balls and the duo shared a point with Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth, whilst the LIV Golf recruit comfortably defeated Brian Harman 3&2 in his singles match.

In the days after Europe completed the Italian job, reports surfaced that Hatton was "the last man standing" after a boozy night in town.

Hatton was pictured wearing Ryder Cup pyjamas and a pair of multicoloured sunglasses.

The golfer told reporters ahead of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth he also had a very boozy night after he found out he had secured his spot for the 2025 team that will head to Bethpage Black in a few weeks' time.

The news coincided with Rahm securing LIV's individual title for the second consecutive year.

They went out for a bite to eat and Hatton said he consumed six glasses of wine with dinner and a double gin and tonic.

Then he saw Rahm on the Disaronno sours and decided to get involved. They went down far too easily, he said.

A "strawberry vodka thing", a Hazelnut and a margarita sour also went down the hatch.

"God, it was aggressive," Hatton said. "It was horrible. But I mean, it was funny at the time.

"I don't ever want to get to that state again to be honest.

"I fell across the bed sideways, and face down in that position, and then I had woken myself up throwing up in that position.

"And I had then fallen back asleep in that position, and then as I'd woken up, I had gotten sick all down my arms, both sides, all down my shirt.

"I get off the bed and walk around to the bathroom, look in the mirror, and [I have] sick in my face, in my bed.

"How I set an alarm to make a flight in a few hours' time, I don't know."

Hatton said he called his wife Emily for advice on how to clean up the mess.

"I was rushing to make the room somewhat acceptable before leaving," he said.

"So yeah, I ended up stripping in the bed, leaving some cash and a note, saying I was 'really sorry, I was sick in the bed in the night, please throw it in the trash'.

"I feel like I did the right thing but [I was] obviously in a pretty bad state."

Ryder Cup preparations

Hatton joined LIV Golf alongside the aforementioned Rahm in 2024.

At the time, some golf pundits suggested he had put future Ryder Cup appearances in serious jeopardy given the lack of opportunities to secure valuable points.

But Hatton - much like US golfer Bryson DeChambeau - qualified for Luke Donald's dozen on merit courtesy of his excellent performances in the majors, particularly in the US Open.

"Qualifying for the team automatically was one of my main goals for this year," Hatton said.

"I knew going into the Desert Classic [in January] that I was going to have that week and four majors.

"So I was going to have five events to earn enough points to be an automatic, and from my three previous Ryder Cups of always making the team automatically, I wanted to keep that going."

Hatton said he thought he had blown his chance after finishing 16th at The Open.

But no qualifying points were awarded at the PGA Tour's season finale at East Lake, meaning Hatton had done enough.

He was given the good news over the phone by Donald.

"I was over the moon to be honest," Hatton said.

The 2025 matches at Bethpage Black are expected to be played in a heated atmosphere.

Donald says Europe's players, caddies, wives and girlfriends will take a "unified approach" to the situation.

Hatton said given what transpired at Whistling Straits in 2021 he won't be "too surprised" with rowdy fan behaviour.

"It's always good fun," he said.

Hatton has been grouped with Robert MacIntyre for the first two rounds of the DP World Tour's flagship event.

Can we read into that?

One scribe put it to Hatton the duo would make quite the pair.

"Be a good amount of moaning, wouldn't it?" Hatton joked. "Be awful."
