LIV Golf's chief executive has claimed he shares a common ground with his counterpart at the PGA Tour over what the next few years of the elite men's game should look like, according to a report.

The Saudi Arabia backed league confirmed yesterday that for the 2026 season they will backtrack on one of their founding principles

All of LIV's $25m tournaments will now be played over 72 holes and not 54. The team element will remain in place but there will be no cut.

LIV - which takes its name from the roman numeral 54 - was launched in 2022 and at no stage has there been any suggestion the league could take such a drastic step.

It is thought the latest development will almost certainly pave the way for the league to be accredited by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR).

OWGR points play a key role in determining major fields for the four men's majors.

Elsewhere, LIV have made changes to what some believe has been a comical relegation system.

All eyes will now be on how the PGA Tour react to this news.

An armistice of sorts was agreed between the two tours in 2023 but, despite previous optimism and several meetings at the White House, it appears no deal will ever be ratified to end the split in the men's game.

In June, the PGA Tour confirmed the appointment of former NFL executive Brian Rolapp as their chief executive.

He will eventually take over from current commissioner Jay Monahan. Monahan will step away from the top job at the end of the 2026 season after a decade in the role.

Rolapp and O'Neil were former classmates at Harvard Business School.

O'Neil has told Sports Business Journal he's had several of conversation with Rolapp since he replaced former Open champion Greg Norman at LIV.

"The two of us have talked a few times," he said.

"Generally we have a common view on what could be or should be the landscape of golf over the next several years.

He added: "There's an opportunity for the whole golf world to come together and grow this pie."

Sergio Garcia reacts to LIV Golf news

It is understood that LIV's shift to a 72-hole format came after pressure from several players.

Former Masters champion Jon Rahm, who joined LIV in December 2023, was among those calling for the league to change format.

Rahm said it would aide players' preparations in the majors and their bid for OWGR recognition.

Sergio Garcia exclusively told GolfMagic that he's happy with the changes.

"I think it's going to give us more exposure and it's going to make it even more competitive," Garcia said.

PGA Tour fire warning shot to members

LIV Golf have also confirmed details of their qualifying school tournament

Their Promotions event will be held next January and will offer exemptions to the top two finishers.

The four-day tournament, which is being held at Black Diamond Ranch in Florida, has been deemed an "unauthorized" event by the PGA Tour, according to SI.

It means that any existing members of the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions or Korn Ferry Tour who takes part will face disciplinary action.

Entries for LIV Golf Promotions will be cut off on 15 December and the field will be announced shortly after.
