LIV Golf boss confirms 2027 recruitment drive may be extremely different

LIV Golf boss Scott O'Neil has already given an insight into the what the league's recruitment efforts will look like for the 2027 season.

The PIF-backed breakaway launched in June 2022 and LIV's initial roster was made up of several major champions, PGA Tour winners and ageing Ryder Cup stars.

Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Sergio Garcia were among the first wave of recruits.

But it wouldn't be unreasonable to suggest LIV have failed to attract a bona fide star since Jon Rahm upped sticks in December 2023.

In recent years, LIV have based its recruitment policy on trying to sign the game's hottest young prospects.

Spain's David Puig and Josele Ballester, America's Caleb Surratt and Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin highlight the current crop of young talent on LIV's books.

And according to LIV chief executive O'Neil, LIV could soon have another team with some of the best young Chinese players.

"There's some tremendous young golfers coming out of China," he told reporters before LIV's event in Hong Kong this week.

"Some of whom we’ve been in contact with and are tracking quite closely, and there's several markets that we think are really interesting."

O'Neil also revealed the league may be heading to a new country in 2027.

"Japan is a really interesting market that LIV is not in," he added.

"Certainly mainland China, India is a big part. There are several markets in Europe that I think are untapped as of yet."

LIV's 2026 schedule features 13 regular events and a team championship.

Five events will be staged in the United States whilst the league will also visit the UK, Spain, Mexico, Singapore and South Africa.

LIV held their curtain-raiser in Riyadh and visited Adelaide in Australia two weeks ago.
