Jon Rahm trails former Masters champion Patrick Reed and Harold Varner III by one stroke after 18 holes at LIV Golf Dallas.
Varner and Reed both went round Maridoe Golf Club in five-under 67s on Friday afternoon.
Reed made an eagle at the second and put more circles on his scorecard at the seventh, eighth, 10th and 12th holes.
His only bogey of the day came at the par-four 18th where he failed to get up and down after missing the green left with his approach.
"The golf course was out there to get," Reed said. "The greens are a little softer I felt like today than it was earlier in the week, so we were kind of really able to attack."
Rahm made four birdies, two bogeys and holed out for eagle at the sixth on his way to posting a 68.
Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell, Abraham Ancer, Anirban Lahiri, David Puig and Louis Oosthuizen are also in the top 10 after 18 holes.
Brooks Koepka was forced to withdraw after eight holes through illness.
Sergio Garcia came into the PIF-backed breakaway's ninth stop of the 2025 campaign needing a good finish to hold onto a spot into next month's Open Championship.
The leading LIV Golf player, not otherwise exempt and in the top five in the standings, will punch their ticket to Royal Portrush next month.
Garcia will need to fend off Lucas Herbert and Sebastian Munoz to make his third major appearance of 2025 and keep alive his slim hopes of being included in the European Ryder Cup team.
The Spaniard finished day one three-over par.
