Bryson DeChambeau and former World No.1 Martin Kaymer share the lead after round one of LIV Golf's stop in Virginia

The reigning U.S. Open champion and the German went round Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in 5-under 66 on Friday afternoon.

Play was temporarily halted due to inclement weather as Graeme McDowell held the lead.

When play resumed two hours later, DeChambeau picked up three late birdies to join Kaymer out in front.

The 31-year-old American is playing this week with a new set of irons that were reportedly approved by the United States Golf Association on Tuesday.

"I've gotten to a place where I feel really comfortable with my game, comfortable with the people around me, comfortable with my team," DeChambeau said after his round.

DeChambeau is expected to mount another challenge for the U.S. Open next week. Scottie Scheffler is the favourite.

Rory McIlroy admitted he plans to spend the next few days testing new drivers after he had a complete disaster at the RBC Canadian Open.

Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm, and individual standings leader Joaquin Niemann also started LIV Golf Virginia well by returning cards for 4-under 67s.

Mickelson revealed at the beginning of the week next week's U.S. Open is likely to be his last.

Lefty shocked the golf world when he won the PGA Championship aged 50 four years ago.

He hasn't won since and his exemption into the major - where he has finished runner-up on six occasions - will expire after this year.

"There's a high likelihood that it will be [my last]," Mickelson said. "But I haven't really thought about it too much."

Elsewhere, LIV's latest signing, Josele Ballester, carded a 3-over 74 on his debut.

Matthew Wolff was forced to withdraw with an injury and has been replaced by reserve Ollie Schniederjans.
